The Eternal Moment.
Time leaves traces. It stays with us for a while, but it also reminds us that we are not free. Freedom.
“Freedom? What about freedom?”
We make decisions that change our lives. We run away, always trying to make ourselves free. From what? What do we think of when we speak of freedom?
“Past? What about the past?”
We have made decisions that changed our lives. Decisions so far behind us that we can no longer even remember them. But are they truly past? Did they make us free?
“Future? What about the future?”
We will make decisions that will change our lives. Decisions that were already made long before we make them. We will have to choose. Is that freedom? Have we ever had a choice?
“Present? What about the present?”
Yes, time has left its traces. We think, and we decide. We try to free ourselves. Every day we think of our future, we miss or regret the past. Yes—past that is not past, and future that we cannot change.
“New beginning? What about a new beginning?”
We all have to die. That choice is not ours. How can we begin again if we can change neither the past nor the future? We cannot. Impossible.
“Impossibility? What about the impossible?”
When do we die? This decision can be made by anyone, and yet it is already past the moment it is made. Death is a trade. The decision to exchange life for death. But it does not make us free. We have no choice. Freedom is impossible. Time does not allow it.
“Life? What about life?”
Life is a gift. A brief moment. We did not choose to live. We are not entitled to choose otherwise. We cannot be free. We can only choose to be free.
“Choice? What about choice?”
There is no freedom. We can change neither the past nor the future. There is no new beginning. We can start no new life, nor make an impossible decision.
“Truth? What about truth?”
There is only one single moment in which we truly have a choice. Only one moment in which we can be free. There is only one decision that can set us free. Just one moment in which the impossible becomes possible. It is the moment we decide that we are free.
An eternal moment. A whole lifetime long.
