For a friend

A poem about darkness, hope, and the quiet act of moving on. Written around 2010 for a friend, and still my favorite piece to this day.

The Alluring Sound of Silence

First evening, then night, then waking alone. A tremble at dawn, no joy to be shown. A tired thought, then a spark burning bright. Then day, then evening, and back into night.

A tremble at morning, so quiet, so bare. The spark from before is no longer there. A tired thought, as the daylight fades. Yesterday’s fear in the evening parades.

The night feels empty, but morning appears. A flicker inside me, long hidden by fears. A tremble by daylight, then evening, then shade. The spark keeps on glowing, a fire is made.

A tremble at dawn, but now with a grin. Then day, then dusk, and awakening within. Surrounded by silence, completely alone. A tired thought of the self I’ve outgrown.

Then night, then morning, and night once more. But something had shifted, down to the core. Alone through the day, yet silently two. With hope and with joy, and freedom in view.
